I just bought a bag of that play area bark, just opened the bag and pushed it about, got it to give the girls something extra to do, it not under cover though, just sort of threw it all under a big bush.   Nickyx

Hi Pink Chicken - Just thought I would let you know that I have used 'pongy' dark brown bark from the garden centre in my chicken run.  Like you I worried once it was spread around because of the pong.  However, apart from one of the chickens having the occasional sneeze for a couple of days, it has been fine and they all seem ok.  Bark is now covered in sawdust - dragged from the coop, and feathers (moult).  I thought I would renew it before the winter sets in (it is covered over), but I might use play bark next time - simply because I didn't like the pong either!
