main crop potatoes
« on: June 25, 2015, 16:41 »
Hi all
My main crop potatoes desiree were planted first of august they have flowers on already, surely this is too
early? my first earlies planted the same time arron pilot and lady christii  have not any flowers at all.
All the plants look green and healthy. I will lift a plant of arron pilot late july to see if they are ready.

I'm assuming you meant April? My maincrops flowered ages ago but so far they are no where close to maturity when compared to an early variety that I planted later than the maincrops. I did dig around and found one large Kennebec, but they still need more time. I don't think flowering is the most reliable way to tell if they're ready, especially since some don't even form flowers.

does seem a little early. just water really well while they're flowering and wait for them to die off.

i've found some earlies don't seem to flower and/ or are ready before they flower. have a little dig around and see whats there.

I usually find maincrops begin to flower when tubers are forming, not when they are ready to harvest
