frostbite!
« on: January 04, 2009, 10:11 »
I think it is going to be minus 5 here tomorrow evening.

So far my chooks have been ok but do you think I should put some vaseline on their combs if it is going to get so cold?

I did this once before a few weeks back when it was cold but wonder if it was necessary. One of them still has dirt stuck to the feathers on her head because of it

They are all bantams. 2 of them are the sussex breed and have very small combs and the other is a plymouth rock with a fairly large comb in comparison to the other : 8)

I would hate them to get frostbite.

I am giving them plenty of corn and have lined their nest boxes and floor with newspaper and bubble wrap.

Any other ides for keeping them warm?

Thanks :)

It wont do any harm, particulary the Plymouth rock. :D
Just a little note -insulation is fantastic just check that the house is quite dry  and ventilation adequate, sometimes condensation can form inside the house.
Oh BTW I love plymouth rocks -any chance of a piccy?  :D  :D

Its only really necessary for birds with large combs and then in extremely cold weather.

Should I put Vaseline on my cock then Bodger - he has a very large comb - they range in the garden during the day but are shut up from twilight in their coop (nice and snug and warm I hope)
