hens not feeding
« on: June 01, 2012, 14:37 »
Do I need to worry? Collected our 5 hens  2 days ago & they are taking very little from the feeder. We are using a good quality layers pellets (sold to us by the lady who sold us the hens). Have hung up spme greens for them & they haven't touched that either. They are picking up something from the layer of woodchip in their run. They are drinking well. Advice please.

What type of hens are they and how old?  Could they have previously been fed a mash rather than pellets?  Mine won't touch their greens either so they could be just fussy!

I wouldn't worry too much just yet.  Moving hens really takes it out of them, and they do eat less when stressed.

If they are still not eating after the weekend, we might have to start thinkging about more tempting things to eat, but often the "tough love" approach is best.

Our's don't eat greens either....unless they are my veggies or prized flowers in the garden!  :ohmy:I've tied them with all sorts, but they would rather wait till they can go and find their own. :)

they are about 16 week old hybrids. Agree they have had a couple of stressful days. They were moved to the seller the same day that we bought them & brought them home.

It may take a few attempts with the vegs.

Even now with mine if i introduce something new they give a look of "you really dont expect me to eat that do you" and they completely ignore it. Yet try again another day and they wolf it down.
It maybe that yours havent had vegs is they've come from a commercial set up.

The main thing is they are drinking well

Pirhanas, yep that's what ours are like :D :D
They all fly up to the top of the shelter when I come with veggies so they can get to them first :nowink:

Yesterday one took a flying leap and landed on the dish on my hand

Don't worry too much, a bit like kids they will eat when they are hungry ;)
