Sorry Summer - do you mean the leftover plants?

If so, if you have only removed the central broccolli sprout, leave it to produce more, smaller spears.  If the leaves are in good condition, you can cook them like spring greens.

If, like me, your leaves are covered in white fly which you don't fancy eating and the spears are exhausted (or the plant has gone to seed), you need to pull it out/dig it up and chop the stem with a spade and add to the compost.

I have heard it said that you can even dig a runner bean trench for next year and add the plants to the bottom of the trench before starting to fill over winter with your kitchen compostables ready for next years runner beans.

I love psb and have grown it quite successfully for the last 2 years.  Sadly this year it looks like mine's not coming to anything.  I tried it on a new bit of ground I've got and it's either failed or been eaten by birds.

It's delicious just tossed in a frying pan with a small amount of butter and some sliced garlic, either on it's own or as an accompaniment to a nice pork chop.  Psb has a lovely nutty flavour but I found the leaves a bit tougher than normal brassica leaves.  I tried steaming them which maybe wasn't the best idea so next year if I have any luck I might try just shredding them thinly and frying or chopping and boiling.

Japanese over winter onions might be a good idea this year.  Don't think the sets are in the shops yet though, but the ones I grew year before last were nice and white  :)

Good luck!!

I always find that Electric (Red) and Radar (White) overwinter well for me.
