French beans as green manure
« on: July 22, 2009, 14:04 »
I see in tje month by month guide to the allotment it talks about using French beans as green manure. How do you set about that? You plant them as per normal, then leave them in the ground during the winter? Is that the idea? Then you dig them up in spring or dig them in?

Leave the roots - they've got the nitrogen fixing bacteria on. You could leave them over the winter or dig them, or just the roots in, in the autumn.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

If they are talking about green manure over winter they are probably referring to field beans or broad beans.

There is no reason not to dig in french beans after they have finished cropping.
