should chickens have fat balls
« on: November 06, 2009, 11:38 »
Hi may seem a silly question but the wild birds have them so can chickens have them?????
Also does any one have any toys to combat boredom for the chickens for when they are in the coop I have just got a large straw bale for them to jump up and down from and pecl at and they have high up roosting bar thay have lots of room to run about in and scratch but do they need anything else and what suggestions have you got?????
thanks  :)

Too much of a fat content SallyLouise, wouldn't do them any good :(

Do they have a run outside that they can go in ? They should only be in the coop overnight and when laying :)

I put things like branches and stones covered in moss for them to mess about and be chickeny with :)

I echo what Vember says, too much fat for them. If you want something fun for them to peck at you can get dangling metal cages for rabbits which have a bell on them from a pet shop and you fill with treats. I put loads of healthy treats in them and hang them around the garden for them to play with and they love them, would be great for in a run.

Now, I must stop sniggering at the title  :tongue2:

Hi i have just clicked on the title, lmao big time. My chickens do have a coop which has a large run on it and they get to have access outside in the garden to rumage as well, but I have just had to seperate one and at the moment she has more time outside than the other 2 so was just hoping to get some ideas for the coop and run mainly  as they only go inside at night and to lay. should chickens have fat balls he he he he he

My that steps cold.

Anyway, when the snow was on the ground last year and the wild birds were getting through a ball a day i did let the hens have a few minutes with a fat ball closely supervised so they didn`t pig the lot. Only one hen got the hang of pecking the swinging ball while the others just picked up the crumbs.

Quite entertaining and i moved the ball up to the wild bird table before they had eaten much.
With the sub zero temperatures i thought the chooks would burn it off rather than gain weight.

Ta for the laugh. :D
