Fat balls
« on: June 11, 2009, 18:26 »
Is it ok to give chickens the odd fat ball?  They are advertised for wild birds (although so are the meal worms I give them as a treat) and they are extremely cheap (4 for £1.35 in the local supermarket), much cheaper than the pecking blocks.  But I'm not sure if they are ok or not for chickens.

Hi Elcie.

I stand to be corrected, but I would say they're one of the worst things you could give them. Not only do they get all the food they need via pellets/mash and/or freeranging, they're generally greedy little blighters who'll end up like barrage balloons given a chance  :D
I would stick with the odd lower fat treat and make sure they get plenty of exercise to burn it all off.  :D

I agree with Rob :)

Only thing they are good for is feeding to wild birds or using as rat bait :)

Tell me about it! My huge bucket full that I bought at no little expense has just been a lovely meal over the past few weeks for passing mice, as well as my chewed up folding chair that made a lovely nest. Now my bum will be nice and cool and on the floor

ok i'm being serious now, i'm guilty, i gave my ex barn hens bird seed balls (are they the same? a round ball in netting) when they were under house arrest because of a fox attack, i thought it would help them from getting bored because they'd had a few weeks free ranging and didn't take kindly to being locked up, however, when they devoured  6 in as many seconds i didn't buy anymore and  gave them a mirror instead :D
