Radish glut.
« on: June 15, 2011, 09:13 »
I went a bit overboard with my radish sowing, I have a row of French Breakfast that are approaching the size of small bananas  :D

The larger ones are getting a little woody and thick skinned. Any ideas what to do with them? I thought of making a soup.
We lived for days on nothing but food and water.

Never heard of radish soup - I'd have thought it would still be woody!

Best thing in my opinion - compost & sow fewer & more frequently!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Try a google....  ;)             Radish Recipies although not sure woody ones will be of use.  :(

I've used a mixed pack this year, and the yellow ones grew quite large and were a bit bitter, so I boiled them for a few minutes and we had them buttered as a veg, like baby turnips. They were very nice, and not bitter. I wouldn't use woody ones though.

Someone on our site recommended radish paratha, so I've pulled some really big ones to try it this week - the on-line recipes use mooli, but she says it is just as good with ordinary radishes.

If you search on the internet you'll find recipes for radish tart and radish chutney. If you can pickle beetroot and cabbage, I don't see why you can't also pickle radishes as well?!! Alternatively, stick some in a stir fry.

Most important though, have fun experimenting.  :D

Yes, I've done that. If you slice them up thinly they're really nice in a stir fry.
