New ladies.
« on: April 03, 2015, 12:15 »
Yesterday I got 2 New additions to my flock. They where rescued from somewhere and look like they are ready for the shelves at asda. 1 is totally bald and the other has feathers around her head and neck. They are around 18 weeks old and they are laying. They where on a diet of layer pelets where I got them from. Their poo is really watery, is this normal for birds like this?

Oh poor things.  They do sound in a bad way, but at least they have got a good home now  :)

I haven't had rescue birds myself, but if they are eating properly, I can't see why their poo shouldn't be normal.  Lack of feathers is common in these kinds of birds, as are pale combs and faces if they have been inside, but their digestive systems shouldn't be affected.

Do you know if they have been wormed?  I think I would make that my first priority to see if that makes a difference.

Im not sure on the worming but my other ladies are due to be wormed so I will do them all together. I just couldn't believe the way they looked and yesterday was the first full day with them and we got an egg from both of them.

That's what I was thinking , what strong birds they must be going through all they have done and still wanting to give me eggs.

Do not be suprised if they stop laying in a day or two , production is like a moving conveyer of eggs at different stages so they cannot stop straight away if upset about a move.
Quarantine for a while is a good idea just in case they have any nasty viruses.

IF they are only 18 weeks old and from a commercial egg production place then quarantine for at least 3 weeks away from your own flock. Commercial will get rid of any birds showing signs of contagious diseases.
Regardless of where you got them it might be worthwhile to contact the RSPCA as there are standards required or DEFRA.
