green manure seeds - planting?
« on: October 04, 2010, 21:54 »
I have bought some green manure seeds, (field Beans, Forage Pea and Forage Rye).  How deep do I plant them?  I bought them on ebay but there were no instructions and I have been searching on line and cannot find anything on how to plant them!   I am planning on using them on my new allotment  :D It is covered in grass and weeds which  I am digging out, and the roots!  I was thinking that as I had done section I would plant the green manure, but no idea how deep to plant them.  Any advice would be really welcome.
Thanks
Juliet

Just broadcats them and rake them in about an inch or so deep and firm down.

Mine came up in a week  :D

I sowed green manure seeds for the first time this year and like you, I wasn't really sure how to do it. When the first beds became available (early September) after I'd forked and weeded, I  broadcasted the seeds and then firmed with the back of a spade then watered. As other beds freed up after forking and weeding, I raked the seeds in, watered and firmed up again with the back of a spade. I sowed Vetch and Rye Grass and both methods have given me good germination.

This is the same mix as I am using, do as sunshineband has said, although I do not firm down, the rye will show first then the other plants.

I think the mix has red and crimson clovers, rye and mustard in it  :)
