OK, so to build a nice wind turbine to charge 12v batteries up, what we need are low RPM permament magnet DC motors to use as generators, with voltages somewhat higher than 12v, a typical example being 30V at 300RPM, or 50V at 1200-1800RPM. such as made by Ametek, and aparently these motors are what are used in treadmills.
so, is there anyone of us who works in a line of business where such motors could be aquired?

Saw a programme once where they were using old washing machine motors to generate electricity, they where using hydro power simply mounting a paddle on the shaft of the motor and floating them on a anchored raft in mid stream. Would they be any good ? loads down the tip.

not really, they would need too much energy to drive them around (hence water power) and are AC motors, so would require rectification which increases the losses and complexity.
that said, it might be worth some experimentation... :?

the washing machine motors were from machines that were mainly marketed in autralia and are not that available over here (I thinkk you can get them but they are expensive). I think they were some direct drive system that were high efficiency motors that were cheap to run. About a year ago I looked into it and couldnt even find a washing machine of the right type on ebay !
You could try to make your own PMG, I downloaded some free plans ages ago, I''ll see if I can dig out the link,
