Celeriac
« on: October 31, 2011, 17:44 »
Hi, Just joined in the past few days and have been searching for info re Celeriac. Having been introduced to it last year we decided to grow our own this year.
The two rows that we planted have been superb, but we are not sure how hardy it is. We had a very slight frost two weeks ago and the foliage seems to have been frosted.
Not really sure how we survived without it for all these years!!!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Mark

Celeriac is very harday and can stay in the gournd untill needed.

Some people cover it with straw but really it should cope perfectly well  :)

Just out of interest Mark, how much did you grow, as it's on our list for next year!

Welcome BTW!

About 36 plants. Sowed seed under glass, excellent germination, pricked out into 6 packs and planted out late May 12" in rows and between.
Very easy to grow, but beware of the whitefly, it only affects the foliage but it is covered.
Mashes really well, only roasted it once and was not too impressed.

Over the last winter and the one before, I've had them left in very frozen ground and they've still been fine. :)

Oops, I just dug mine up to protect them from any imminent frosts.  Better get mashing  ::)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

i won't tell a soul  :nowink:

I was surprised how slow growing they were after germination  I thought they were goners, and forgot about them. Then one day realised that they had survived after all  :D

Must be a distant relation to seed onions then.

I've never managed to grow one bigger than a tennis ball.  :(
By the time you've chopped off all the tentacles there's really not much left.
