Hi Geoff.

We just fill the feeder every day and they help themselves to as much as they need then stop. We feed layers' pellets.

I know many others feed this way.

I give my chickens access to a feeder all day until they go to bed.  The food is taken indoors every night simply to help keep vermin and slugs out!  If I am late shutting the house up, I find a variety of different coloured slugs munching on the layers pellets.   Plus I give a large handful of corn each afternoon as a treat, that is for 4 chickens (1 cockerel and 3 hens), then they have any green scraps, DANDELIONS (their very favourite!) and they are on grass.
They have an ark so they are moved regularly.  Also have to move two large pens which are extentions to the ark as we have foxes living nearby that come in our garden to play!! Plus my Springer Spaniel shows much too much interest in "chickens" to have them truly free range. :(

much the same as the quackermass!

Feeders are hung inside the houses and they have access adlib. They have have in the early evening some mixed corn to scratch around for. Layers is their main diet. I feed more mixed  corn in winter to help them kep warm.
