This happened last year. I grew onion sets and they came to nothing and went slimy and soft. I am looking at my Settons which were planted a couple of months ago and they are hardly any bigger than when I planted them except for the shoots which are tall. I dug around them and had a feel of the bulbs feel soft and slightly slimey.

Is this curtains again ?

they are using up energy from the little starter bulbs to grow, and will soften at this stage.
They wont start growing properly and begin to fatten up until we get some decent weather, so don't give up on them.
Mine are the same by the way.........so don't  panic

Mine are the same so I wouldn't worry.  One of my onion beds, interestingly the one nearest to the chicken run, keeps getting pulled up so I have just about given up on that one.  But with the others I shall be patient.

Throw some net over to stop the birds pulling at the stems thinking they are worms.  You can take it off once the roots have established enough to prevent this.
