Carrot fly
« on: August 07, 2008, 23:00 »
Once again as I come to harvest my carrots I find that they are infected by carrot fly
This year I have grown them in big blue barrels that are at least 3ft high,
I don't know what else to do.
Someone told me not to sow them before June, has anyone heard of this

Please Help

I had carrot fly last year which had got over my 2ft high enviromesh cage.

This year I have Carrot Knox - 3 ft high with a covered top.  I used blue tube hoops to begin with but they out grew them and they are now redundant.

My carrots are luverly and no fly holes  :D

I've got my parsnips in there too as carrot fly will damage them and let canker in.

I purchased Maestro carrot seed from Sutton's which they said was 'Resistant to Carrot Fly'. Well they were wrong because my carrots are useless this season because they have been battered by carrot fly.

I have not got a single carrot of use from a packet of 550 seeds.
Next season I will be using a 3 foot high plastic barrier. I feel Sutton's should give me my money back.

Carrot fly have several 'seasons' during the growing time. The worst is mid May to mid June. By sowing late you miss this period.

As regards carrot fly "Resistant" you'll find that it's carefully worded and they don't claim to be carrot fly "proof".
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Maybe they only put up a token resistance before succumbing to the invaders.  Are they French carrots by any chance?

I was impressed by the pegs too, I would never have dreamed of using them for this otherwise.

It makes it easy to lift the top of without letting any flies in while you lean in to weed and harvest
