New rhubarb and strawberry in a raised bed
« on: September 24, 2018, 07:29 »
Hi there,

Completely new to growing fruit and veg so any advice super welcome. I planted rhubarb and strawberries in this raised bed as late as July. As you can see in the picture the rhubarb is really taking over. Should I be cutting/trimming it or leaving alone?

Many thanks and best wishes, Andy

Leave the rhubarb to die down naturally, some people leave the leaves in situ to feed the plant, personally I remove the leaves when they’re dry & shrivelled & replace with a good mulch of well rotted manure around the plant but not over the nobly bits that you can see. You might want to move a few strawberry plants nearest the rhubarb as it will get bigger next year & shade them out & now is a good time so they settle in for next year.

I don't know if it would work but you could try putting a few short canes around the outside of the rhubarb so the leaves don't flop onto your strawbs.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

our rhubarb bed is next to the strawberry bed but not razed beds athough we grow several rhubarb varieties the  most of our  rhubarb we grew is from seed the variety [champagne] basically we look after our  rhubarb as what's been said by othere's
rhubarb  makes a lovely summer cordial drink even better with drop of Gin added  :D :D
