New chicken run
« on: January 02, 2009, 17:48 »
Hi all, just finished fencing off  3\4 of  a unused allotment next door, which I intend to use as a chicken pen.  What I would like to know is would it be ok to plant some apple trees in the pen to utilise the area. Dont know if apple leaves are ok for chickens.
PS happy new year to everyone.
Geoff. :)

i have a apple tree in my run , its only small as the ppl who planted it tied the wire to tight to the support post  an the tree only ever grew to about 4 foot high but the girls love trying to jump up an eat the apples, i have never had  a problem .

Hi Geoff, often see the folks here talking about their hens free ranging in the orchard, so I am sure it will be fine  :D

Just beware, as looby says, you'll have no apples below the 4ft mark

I bet they'll make themselves a ladder come autumn and strip the lot
