Tiny cucumbers on young plants. Remove?
« on: May 21, 2013, 19:49 »
I have some young cucumbers plants coming along nicely at about a foot high, but they are developing tiny fruits.  Should I remove them?

I don't know what the proper answer should be, but I have never removed any in the past  I am always too pleased to see them growing

They might be the start of female flowers. I'd leave them alone. Plus cukes are suicidal so I try not to do anything to them that I'm not certain they need.

What type of cuke are they? I'm growing miniature whites and one of mine looks like it little flowers about to come out. I agree with simonwatson - don't poke the snake - leave em alone!

If you are growing a variety with regular sizes cukes, 8in plus, there is not much point letting fruits set that can't mature without reaching the soil.
I have 10 plants growing well, and am aiming to get them up about4.5 ft then grow them horizontal and have em hanging down, so an trying to concentrate all the early growth into leaf and stem rather than fruits. When they are really established, I will have bigger plants that will fruit strongly so am therefore rubbing off all fruits and side shoots at the moment.

If you are growing a small fruited variety of cuke the usual advice is to nip off any fruits up to about the one foot mark - it is supposed to make the plant stronger and fruit better. I usually do not bother and usually do quite well with my cukes - except for those which decide that life is not worth living.  ::)
