« on: September 12, 2013, 00:09 »
Hello All.

I have just purchased a 14x8 green house, I would like to plant two grape vines.

I know little about vines and would appreciate any help you could give.

1. what variety's are best,
2. is it best to plant inside or outside GH
3.when is it best to plant. :(

I watched Monty on GW.  He planted a grape in the ground outside the GH.  He cut a hole in the bricks to let it inside.  His idea is to grow it throughout the GH.  From memory he planted it about two foot from the GH side and trained the leader in through the hole.

1. I cannot possibly advise on, you can do a research for yourself.

2. Outside.

3. Dormant season.

I've got a friend who's got a lovely active vine and does just this.

I have 2 vines in my greenhouse. I planted them as close to a corner as I could inside, so the roots could grow down and out. They need cool moist roots. Apart from their first year I have never watered them so their roots must be in the right place.

I have one black Hamburg, and one Strawberry grape.

Remember they will almost invariably have seeds in unless you specifically hunt down a seedless variety. Seedless ones tend not to make good wine if you are interested in that.

Don't expect much if anything in the way of fruit for a good 3 years. They need to be pruned carefully or you won't get any fruit at all.
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

It might not matter much, where you put the root, however, as the bare minimum it saves space in the greenhouse, as the plant is fully frost-hardy, the GH is only needed for ripening the fruit on our dismal summers.

I have a Black Hamburg, its planted outside (I replaced a pane of glass with a sheet of marine ply with a hole in the middle).  make sure you provide good drainage, so that water running off the greenhouse doesn't swamp it

Is that why Monty planted it a good two feet from the GH?

I think that planting inside then needs a lot of irrigation, and its probably quite difficult to get the amount right.  Outside and the plant can pretty much look after itself, except in very dry summers.

Sorry, don't know.  Might have been to get the angle to then grow it in through the bricks?  I have lots of rubble under mine.  If planting at the end of the greenhouse, rather than the side, I think there is a risk that the gutters provide a lot of water in winter - even if caught into a water butt I expect there is a fair chance it will overflow in winter.

If I remember correctly it was to stop the roots taking over the greenhouse and to provide drainage.

The two whites were the same type so I was kinda expecting the same amount or growth

I would have done too :)  Maybe just a slow starter.  Nothing eating its roots is there?
