Potatoes

Right then, at work we have a 5 acre market garden, this year has mainly been an experimental year to see what grows well.
We have a lot of potatoes, and we have well over 200 kilos left in the ground. If we are to cover them all with straw, to keep harvesting them for customers as we have been doing, or would the frost still make them soft? If so then we will have to lift them all and probably flog them to a chippy or something
What would you do, lift them all, or try and protect them? :)
If you want to be happy for a short time - get drunk.

If you want to be happy for a long time - fall in love.

If you want to be happy forever - take up gardening!

I think it depends on the severity of the winter we're going to get.

I have successfully overwintered Charlottes before, but didn't try it last year
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I think you would be better lifting them then storing them in a clamp if you wanted to keep them. Leaving them in the ground leaves them easily available for slug attack. Also if the weather took a real turn for the worse you might not be able to dig the ground to get them out but would still be able to get into the clamp.
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

If the winter turns out to be as harsh as last year it will take more than a covering of straw to protect them. I think I would lift them rather than risk losing the lot.
Sets a low standard and fails to achieve it.

I used to work on a farm a few years back and the spuds were always, but always lifted, mainly because of slug attack, but also because of frost.
There were times that even the spuds that had been lifted and stored in straw covered boxes were hit by frost, it really depends upon the severrity of it.
