Sawfly on redcurrants

Only just seen your post, these are probably Gooseberry Sawfly, about three quarters inch long creamy green with black spots; a major pest they defoliate plants, this defoliation won't affect this years crop, but will affect next years. Pick off as many as you can/spray with derris, bifenthrin or any insect spray suitable for fruit. The caterpillars drop off once they reach a certain size and burrow into the ground where they pupate and pop up next year laying eggs on the lower leaves and the process starts all over again. The important thing is to break the cycle, I am sure there is also a nematode preparation available, ask at your garden centre.
