Poor courgette germination
« on: May 02, 2012, 07:08 »
I have planted 6 courgette seeds into modules. Only one has germinated and grown into a strong plant. Is this normal ?

Its probably been far too cold for them, how long ago did you sow the seeds?

If they don't show soon, I'd start thinking about sowing some more, if the temperatures start to rise a bit.

it has definitely been too cold, even when sown indoors there hasn't been any warm sunshine to warm up the compost.  I've delayed sowing mine but one look at the bank holiday weather forecast and with day temperatures of just 8oC  it will be for while longer still!

Not wanting to seem to gloat - I sowed 10 and within 5 days got 8 showing. They were sowed in an unheated greenhouse. I also sowed loads of pumpkin seeds (given by a friend) in the same greenhouse and on a windowsil indoors. Only one of the pumkins appeared so I bought some and yet again - 5 days later got 9 out of 10 appearing. For me it seems as if the quality of the seed made more difference than where I put them.

empty out the pot, they might be having difficulty coming out of the seed. Last one has just started, had to repot as too much stem. All 6 here.

I started my off in our unhetaed greehouse and theres no sign of them either! If there is no appearance by this weekend I think Iwill start again, it doesn't feel right buying courgettes

I started mine off in the airing cupboard, then moved to a south-facing windowsill once the first couple had poked through. The rest soon followed. Try introducing a bit of heat.

As Sunny says, cool weather doesn't agree with courgettes. And it's possible that your seeds are a bit old. Normally they should be viable for quite a few years but I find by year 4, they're useless so I toss the old seeds and buy fresh. They're cheap enough.

I think you'll find that the first reply hit the nail on the head, the others have backed it up!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

they are one of the few seeds, curcubit family that get the special treat of the heated propagator. most things just go in the unheated spare room which gets warm in the mornings when its sunny!
