plants from nowhere
« on: October 14, 2011, 20:00 »
last year I noticed a plant growing in a corner of my allotment, that did,nt quite look like a weed .So I left it there, when it started to flower,it had delicate purple /black flowers on it,I subsequently identified it as an unusual variety of Aquliega, the nearest to it was "atrata",I saved the seed from it and now have lots of healthy looking seedlings.Has anybody else ever come across any weird and wonderful plants popping up on their plot?

Aquilegias are notoriously prolific and the seed will burst out to great distances. Obviously someone nearby was growing them, and now you can. I love them and keep them for the bees as they're such an easy care plant.

One flower that appeared out of nowhere in my garden was yellow phlomis. None of my neighbours are gardeners so I've no idea how it landed in mine, but I've now divided up the plants and have them both in front and back. Strangers have come to my door asking what the unusual flower is.

I got borage and fennel that appeared from nowhere this year :)
Now I'd like some bronze fennel to appear, please  :D
