Coleslaw cabbage...
« on: August 15, 2011, 19:39 »
Does the team think that there is a special cabbage, growable from next year (now we have room), which is ideal for coleslaw?

At' Growster Turrets', coleslaw comes a close second to runner beans, but of course, is at opposite ends of the year!

We do get a lot of clubroot around here, so the type may be limited anyway!

I'd be interested in anyone's views pleasse!

Ordinary 'white' cabbage is normal here, but the pointy sweetheart cabbages make a nice one too.  :) There's going to be lots of red cabbage slaw being made and eaten here soon too.

Primo is my favorite.  It's a hard ball type cabbage.

Filderkraut - bred for sauerkraut. They can get big, mind! Nice fine leaves with less ribbing than usual so good for eating raw. Fairly strong flavour, so if you prefer white cabbage coleslaw it is probably not for you!

I quite like to change things occasionally (because I could happily eat slaw with almost everything!) and do a red coleslaw - red cabbage and onions with beetroot.

Many thanks all, that's a great list!

We usually start to crave for coleslaw about the same time that the runners disappear, so are looking for one or two types, which will see us through until spring if possible.

It's quite a tall order, but we've just found that they just maybe a chance that because one area of the plot hasn't been dug for nearly ten years, the clubroot couldhave died out...

Why not live in hope, it's better than the alternative!

Like the sound of Minicole though!

I can vouch for minicole Growster  :D

One head is just the right size for a good batch of coleslaw  :D :D

Dutch white cabbage is the preffered one here. Pull at the first sign of frost and keeps all winter in the shed.

Is' Dutch White' the type, or the actual name?

I'm thinking of growing kohl rabi as well next year, but will wait until I see how much space we have...

Look for "Holland Winter White" in the seed catalogues

I've used Primo, minicole and kohl rabi at various times in coleslaw, each give a slightly different outlook, all delicious.
