Waterlogging - An Opportunity?
« on: February 27, 2011, 20:03 »
Hi

Weve just got an allotment on a site where the drainage isnt very good, the ground is waterlogged. I was thinking .. There isnt a water supply nearby so - Could this be an opportunity?

If we dug some drains could we drain all the water to one end of the land, collect it in a ditch then harvest as much water as we need into a well / water butts? Im sure we would have too much water and need to create a run off but it even seems after some looking around it would be possible to clarify with a catchpit?

Anyone heard of, done it or seen this kind of thing?

Thanks

If the water falls on your land, or land that you hold the tenancy for, then you have the right to it. But if you have a run off, then the water authority will do its best to charge you for disposal of the run off so be carefull where you aim it.

You will be ok as long as the water is used for watering. It runs back into the ground aquifiers. You cannot use the water for commercial uses. You can buy a 12v pump to run off a car battery which makes it easier to fill the butts. Better still try to get a fresh orange juice tank they hold 100s of litres and raise it up on breeze blocks, put a tap on the bottom attached to a porous hose and run along your rows of runner beans.

sure there's a solar pump which would give you the trickle you'd need to get the water to the top of the plot... then into IBC tanks
