Is This Tomato Blight?
« on: July 22, 2007, 13:50 »
I have blight on my potatoes and it has destroyed 2 out of 3 varieties but I went into my greenhouse today and on one of my tomato plants has brown blotches - just on the lower leaves, is this also blight?  If so, what would cause it in the greenhouse?  and what should I do.

Avoid fruit and nuts.  You are what you eat.

Doesn't look like it to me.  If all the leaves above these ones are nice and green then I wouldn't worry - it's probably to do with settling in on transplanting.  Focus on harvesting nice red toms instead!

My tom plants were looking very ropey when I transplanted them - some of the leaves going black just like yours (far too late this year), but a couple of weeks on and they've all got some nice green growth on the top and I'm picking ripening toms.
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.

I have blight on my greenhouse tomatoes ...
... and it is quite distinct and quite devastating.

The outside edges of the leaves are brown and crispy, next to the crisp brown bits are yellow edges and then normal leaf (if you're lucky!).  The brown discolouration is also on the stems and on some of the fruit.  The underside of the leaves also look a bit powdery.

Some of the tomatoes are so badly affected that I've got rid, others I have taken off the leaves and sprayed with bordeaux mixture.  We wait!

What you have doesn't look like blight to me.  I would pick off the lower leaves and keep an eye on them.

You should be removing your lower leaves in the greenhouse by now anyway to help the fruit to ripen.

toms in greenhouse
I heard somewhere that blight spores have to land on wet leaves to develop, so toms in greenhouse should be ok. And thats why the blights been so bad this year.
My outdoor toms. have suffered along with the potatos but those in the greenhouse are ok.
