moving/pruning roses
« on: September 23, 2009, 17:20 »
Hi

I planted 2 roses in the spring and have now decided that I would like  to swap over their positions!

One is a bourbon rose Louise Odier and the other is the rambler Albertine.

Should I wait until Spring to do this?

I have read various articles about when/if to prune and how to move roses but I am now totally confused!!

Many thanks for any tips you can offer.

A couple of RHS links:

One thing to be aware of is that if you put a rose into a spot where a rose has previously grown, it may well not survive - it's called rose replant disease (not entirely sure what the reason is).  It may be that your plants haven't been in situ long enough to create the conditions which would prevent the other rose thriving, but I don't know enough about this to say for sure.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Prune them hard in November and replant, add some grow more to the soil. Should be OK as it's mainly old diseased roses that you shouldn't replace unless you remove all the soil in a 2' square.
