shady allotment
« on: October 23, 2008, 09:24 »
Hello!
I am new to this (have dabbled with growing veg in my garden) and I have finally been offered an allotment.
The space it about 30 feet from some quite large trees and although it is difficult to tell at the moment it appears to be a shady spot.
Is this a viable option? or will the trees sap all of the nutrients from the soil and block all sunlight?
Any advice would be welcome.
many thanks
Wendy

I've got a plot shaded on two sides by tall hedges but I've recently been doing some pruning. Even before that though I managed to grow stuff just fine.  Potatoes, celery, parsley, onions, comfrey, weeds, beans didn't seem to mind at all.    I quite liked the tall hedges as it blotted out the vile shed next door and the noise from a nearby house. Mind you I did get to see a lotty neighbour I'd not seen for yonks and cobbed him an apple over

That sounds very encouraging compostqueen!
I really wanted to grow the following:
Squashes and pumpkins
courgettes
potatoes
asparagus
rhubarb
gooseberry
redcurrant
blackcurrant
borlotti beans
sweetcorn

plus lots more....
I guess the only way to know for sure is to give it a try!
thanks
wendy

if it's deeply shaded you will struggle to grow some crops so if that's the case you'd have to see if you could let in more light by lopping some low branches if they overhang your plot. Carefully though  :D

Until recently, mine had a lovely crop of nettles despite the shade ;)
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".
