carrots...what to do??!!

Heey guys im gettin on well with my allotment...ive planted some gladioli, and some early potatoes soo far....my pumpkins and cabbages are goin strong on my window sill...but i have a question....i have some carrot seeds and i was gonna plant them the other day...but there sooo tiny and i had nooo idea where to start!!! any advice???
Help!! Im just starting out!!

Hi there, You could try mixing the seed with a little fine sand, then you'll see where you have sowed! Have fun.

i sow mine in trays first and when the true leaves appear i transplant them... only problem with that is i found most of the carrots turn out a funny shape (i think its something to do with the roots being disturbed) but it doesnt effect the flavour or anything... going to try and sow them direct this yr tho

Mixing with sand is fairly good - they are so small. Do thin out when the start to grow though. Carrot thinnings are great in salads.

I suppose its only obvious when you think of it, I hadn't thought of spring onions. I bet Fennel thinnings are quite nice.

I like to close space lettuce and pull out the odd one in the row. This gives the rest time to grow larger.

Tip with lettuce. If you can get them up with roots you can put them in water like a flower and they'll keep well for ages. Much better than nitrogen packed cut leaves in supermarket bags :)
