Mid February I went to my allotment to find something had truly munched and stripped the stems of my Kale. What would have done this? It goes quite high up the stem. From memory, it only did it on a particular kind of Kale too, frilly green and white leaves, didn't touch the Cavolo Nero or another all green type. I've never seen rabbits down there. Would pigeons do this? I would love to find out and wondered if anyone can help me. Thanks!

I don’t think pigeons could strip the stems like that, definitely look like rodent damage, mice, rats or rabbits. I’m having an issue with mice chewing the tops off my newly planted cabbage down to the ground at the moment

Hello could it be deer  they eat most things theres been a Roe deer and fawn in a garden I work in they've eaten the perennial geraniums and some of the Rose's ,pigeons don't usually eat the stems    jezza

Well thanks for input all. Kale is in netting cage, but it happened when high winds loosened the netting at the bottom, so I think something small-ish got under the netting. So not deer. Seems that it will remain a mystery!

I'd go with a rat by the look of that. When my netting blew off the sweetcorn last year, my allotment neighbour saw two rats devouring the cobs. But he was too late getting there, caught one but nothing left at all on the plants.
