Overwintering rhubarb - quick question
« on: September 29, 2017, 11:18 »
Hoping for a speedy response to my question because I'm going away tomorrow for a month.
I've covered all my raised beds but I don't know what to do with my rhubarb plant. It still has a few straggly stems and leaves.
Can I leave it until I return at the end of October - or do I need to do something to protect it?
I live in a mild corner of Ireland where freezing temperatures are rare and it's highly unlikely there'll be any frost while I'm away.
Any swift advise gratefully received as I need to deal with this today. (Yes, I know - should have been checking this weeks ago!)

It will be absolutely fine just left, the remaining leaves will just wither and drop off.  If you have any compost or manure put some around it but not over the top.  No worries if not, it'll be fine.  Rhubarb is pretty hard to kill!

Thanks, BumbleJo - that's exactly the answer I was hoping for. One less chore to deal with is great, considering I haven't even started packing yet.

Rhubarb originates from Siberia. As such it needs no protection whatever so don't worry. :)
