floppy begonias - help!
« on: March 20, 2015, 08:55 »
I recently received some VERY expensive (£15.00 for 4!!) begonia jumbo plugs. I have never grown begonias before. I have potted them up and kept them in an unheated conservatory for a week or so, and they look ok but the outer leaves have all gone very floppy. The smaller, inner leaves are fine and firm still. It is still pretty cold in the conservatory, especially at night - should they just be somewhere warmer (although everywhere warmer will certainly be a lot less bright). And will they be ok or have I made a big mistake?

I'd bring them indoors at night, still too cold in an unheated conservatory or greenhouse on some days - let alone at night.

The other thing they don't like is wet roots, especially if they're cold as well!

these have now been in the heated propagator in the conservatory for a few weeks, and have firmed up nicely (all except one which died) but there has been absolutely no growth since they arrived. I know they will have had a setback from that cold spell but shouldn't they be putting on some growth now that the conditions are right?

I would switch off yopur propagator and, if your conservatory is getting a bit warmer during the day, you could take the lid off then put it back on at night. They may well have been set back a bit but sound ok.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
