The only Winter trailing plants I know suitable for troughs, baskets etc are ivies but there are several other plants you can use for your troughs.
I've just planted two baskets with two kinds of ivy, winter flowering heathers, a small skimmia japonica, winter flowering violas and pansies and a Gaultheria. Underneath them all I have planted miniature daffs for next Spring. There are also those Ornamental cabbages available now.

Oh yes, there are lots of different types although not all are fully hardy. You will get a choice of at least two or three at Garden Centres.
