I am growing some from seed in trays then transplanting them on my allotment this year, do they need as much animal/bird protection as my veggies ?

Generally not, unless you have a rabbit problem! Whatever you've planted will benefit from deadheading and staking but that's all really.

The great thing about rabbits is that they breed faster than they can be eaten.
