Title: What is doing this ... and how can I stop it!
Post by: Deborah1 on May 10, 2021, 08:31
An insect of some kind (?) is eating through/cutting off the young tips of new growth on my Apple trees. Itís also nipping off the flower buds on my Medlar - one by one >:( Any idea what it is and how I can prevent it? I search but can find no bugs. But the next morning, more damage! Thanks for any help ideas.

Can you upload an image, it sounds more like bird damage than insect.

Iíve just taken possession of an old book on fruit growing by HG Witham Fogg, so Iíve looked up your medlar & it says ďMedlars are not subject to any particular pests or diseases. Occasionally leaf-eating weevils are troublesome in the spring, but they can be controlled by a thorough dusting or spraying of Derris ď not sure on the Derris though! Think it has probably been banned, but as I garden organically I donít use anything  :)

Do you have bullfinches where you live? They are renowned for this kind of behaviour.
