Identifying Raspberries
« on: July 05, 2011, 22:27 »
I got my plot last year and found a bunch of raspberry canes buried in bramble. They fruited in approximately June last year on what I believe were the previous year’s canes. Over the winter they were dug and replanted. Come this May/ June they were growing new canes and had some fruit on the old canes, but this was minimal as the growth of these canes was hampered by their struggle in the bramble, lack of feed and love. I cut these the old canes in order to reduce stress on the plant and to get better growth in the new canes. These new canes are doing well and now have flowers on them!

So my questions are: do you think these are summer or autumn raspberries? Also, can raspberries fruit twice in a season on the old and new canes?

I did find a label in the shed from a summer species, but there were canes in a another area on the plot. My neighbour said one area was summer and the other autumn, but she cannot remember which was which.

Thanks in advance,

Andy.

Well the only ones that are able to fruit on old and new canes are autumn raspberries, but then I`m confused as you say they only fruited in June last year.
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

Similar problem on my new plot. A small crop early in the  year followed by good growth, which now seems to be fruiting again. Is it a funny year??? or do I cut them all down this autumn and see what happens?

If they are fruiting now they are autumn fruiting :)

If you don't cut this year's canes right down to the ground they wil produce a small crop on last year's canes.

I had a small crop on the old canes from last year and now have a bumper crop on this year's canes. I'm making jam like no tomorrow now :)

p.s. They're autum raspberries  ;)
