Early apples...
« on: August 15, 2011, 06:11 »
We have two Lord Lambourne trees, and this year they're well in advance of previous years.

Has anyone else noticed that fruiting is much earlier?

We have a Lord Lambourne tree and this is the first ywar we have let it fruit. Thye are not really ripe yet, but growing well (well thinned too  :) ) .

Our 40 year old Golden Delicious, which ripens by the end of October, seems  :)on track tbh

An orchard owner was interviewed on tv (so it must be true) ::) and he said that all his apples were two to three weeks ahead this year.

LLs are fabulous apples KC, we were hooked on them years ago, when a local farmer used to sell them by the 5lb bag.

They never lasted long...

Funnily enough, you can cook with them as well, and although they are too sweet to be a 'real cooker', Mrs Growster is a dab hand with the crumble etc...

Your Golden Delicious crop will be a winner I'm sure, it has been a good year so far!

Yes Mrs G saw that Ice, and we noticed the 'June drop' wasn't as pronounced this year as well.

Presumably most of the supermarkets are going to knock out the usual French stuff pretty soon...

tasted like an apple  :D  It was fine, slightly on the sharp side but not enough to stop me picking and eating them  :D  I think* it was a cox so I would say they are early this year.

My apple tree (Bramley) flowered very early this year. As a result, there's already good sized fruit on it. A lack of any strong winds also means it's got a lot more fruit on it that normal.

My boss has a small 25 acres or so and he's been bringing in bags of discovery apples for about 3 weeks now! Very nice they are too.....
I love how the red from the skin seeps through into the flesh on them!!  :tongue2:

My neighbour has a beautiful apple and pear tree and they are both early this year and absolutely laden with fruit.

It is such a shame that they don't bother picking any of the fruit. It all falls on the ground for the chickens, ducks and goat. *sob*

Could you not ask for some of the fruit?

I just love Discovery, and they're early as well!

They never used to come into their own (back in the fifties that is), on one particular orchard, until end August!

We tried a LL last evening and they are still not quite ready - next week maybe...

Can I pick my apples early - before the Squirells eat them?
