Damn Pests on my broad beans
« on: February 25, 2008, 10:48 »
My first sowing this year to enter the ground, it was all going well!!
Until I noticed the some little pest has cut neat holes in the leaves of a couple of plants. Don't think they are slugs as no trail. The holes are very small and cut well by something with teeth.

Any ideas???? Could it be mice???

I got that with my peas last year - I dismissed the possibility of a pigeon problem, but never really did suss out what it was.  Once the plants got growing properly, the leaf cutting more or less stopped.

As my plot is riddled with ants, I wondered ... but I never saw them on the plants.

This article says that they become active in March.  But we have had a VERY mild winter (we have in Kent anyway   )

Get a hand blender a few cloves of garlic and some cooking oil. Mix one liter of water with four table spoons of oil and the garlic. Blend to an emulsion. Spray on the leaves of anything being attacked. Works for me!

Pea and bean weevils cut very characteristic, half circle like shapes out of the leaves around the edge. If the damage is not too much and the plants not too small, they should recover from it. Give them a seaweed feed, which is good end of winter anyway.

Plants are at best four inches high. Have bought derris dust and applied. It seems to be happening overnight which suggests Weevills.
The cuts are semi circular.
Will see what awaits me tommorrow. Hopefully dead weevills
