Title: Squirells
Post by: dexyblue on September 02, 2011, 11:06
A squirel/s have striped and eaten most of my sweetcorn and the sunflower seeds from the heads, they have also dug the paths inbetween my beds, I presume to bury my produce. How can I deter the little blighters?

They would need to be quite tall badgers? ;) Although yes they can reach up on their hind legs i assume they would damage the plants with their weight? Or if they were that keen on the produce just pull the plants down! Either way I guess the damage would be quite obvious.  ???

Mind you if its a grey squirrel you'll have to be willing to kill it once caught as i believe you cant return them back into the wild.

In my experience there is only one effective way to catch squirrels, unless you have a gun. The spring trap tunnel works well and dispatches the quarry on most occasions which is what you want as it is illegal to release them back into the wild as they are classed as vermin. you should be aware that the rspca have prosecuted people for killing squirrels in what they regard as an inhumane way. There is a book called trap making step by step the author is john bryan ISBN 978-0-9558535-0-0 this will give you all the info you need. Good hunting and remember corn fed squirrel taste delicious.
