Seed Sowing
« on: January 26, 2008, 21:32 »
I would like to know if I can I use the compost that the worms in my wormery have produced in its original form to sow vegetables seeds in, or does it need to be mixed with something else.

In general. completed worm compost is too rich for seeds.  I suggest mixing along these lines :

equal parts garden soil, worm compost and coarse sand

Brilliant. Thank you W G.  that is just what I was hoping to hear, I don’t really want to have to buy compost if I have the means to make it myself.

How would I sterilise the compost?
I have a flame gun would that be useful?

Deffo no - it will destroy humus content.

Microwave oven is easiest but I wouldn't bother unless you know your soil has clubroot or whiterot.

I take the view that sterlised soil will simply get re-colonised by something and will have no soil fauna to resist.

Thank you. I will do as you say and just leave it un-sterilised.
