My heated propagator looks like a tropical garden
« on: February 16, 2010, 22:11 »
Just a quick question, I have sown tomoatoes, aubergines and peppers into my propagator just a couple of days ago.

It's currently running at 21 degrees, but looks like it could be Kew Gardens in there.

Is it supposed to be a very humidity in there ?  Or are my seeds not going to like that ??

I could take the lid off and air them, but don't know whether it should be so humid or not.

Any advice ?

Sounds too humid to me.
I would let some air at them.
I only leave the lids on for germination, off they come after that.

Sounds very humid - you will be getting damping off in there.  Which is very annoying - your precious little plants just rot off at the base.   :(  Give them a bit of air and dry off inside the lid, but be careful of cold draughts too.

It's still very early though - have you got somewhere to put the plants when they've germinated?
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

My greenhouse.

I've got an unheated greenhouse, but I've got a plastic mini greenhouse inside at the end for extra heat.

Depends on a few things, is your propagator thermostically controlled?, is it in a greenhouse which is likely to get quite hot anyway when the sun comes out?

I've got it down to a fine art in the last few years, and if the propagator isn't thermostically controlled you will need to keep an eye on daytime temps and turn on and off, also open greenhouse door on hot days. There ought to be vents on top of the propogator which I would recommend to leave open, you could also do with a through flow of air (my hubby rigged up a fan (from a car) in the ceiling and a long tube of plastic down to the floor to recirculate the air).

Other tips, dont over water, only water when drying out, not automatically everyday, and cover seeds with vermiculite not soil, stops damping off and other fungal diseases.

Sounds good.  I have opened up the vents.  They are in the living room and already covered in vermiculite.    Thanks for the advice.

I wouldn't worry too much... I have a cheap propagator that doesn't have a thermostat control. 'Tis pretty humid inside - lots of condensation on the lid, and I keep the top vents closed. But I do check it every day and whip out the little pots as soon as they have germinated. That works for me.

My plastic bags don't have vents either.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

"I've got an unheated greenhouse, but I've got a plastic mini greenhouse inside at the end for extra heat."

I reckon you need a minimum of 10C (at night) for Toms otherwise they "Stall" - and take ages to get going again. Mind you, nothing to stop you bringing the pots into the house at night if it looks like being too cold in the greenhouse - they don't need light at night, of course!
