Red mites.. I think!! Need advice.
« on: July 28, 2012, 21:37 »
Hi all, i was cleaning coop today and saw some black insect coming out from the gaps/cranies.. I saushed 1 and blood splashed so i think they r red mites but my chooks go in the house as usual cant see much problems. But they were black so i guess they have been feeding on them.

I gave the cope a diatom slurry (hillgfooter's) and painted it inside the coop and few more came out, i hope the slurry will kill them.. Will it kill them all? Should apply it again?

Any advice

Mohsin :)

If the girls are going to bed as usual, you may be lucky and have caught the red mite early when there are only a few. If the hens are hanging about outside much later than normal, thats a sign they are putting off going to bed so they don't get bitten.

Hillfooter's diatom slurry will deter red mite, but to kill them you need a different product.  I've only had them in the coop once and I used Poultry Shield, which you dilute with water and spray the coop with.  It was very effective and cleared them completely, but you do need to spray those nooks and crannies well  :)

Hi Mo
poultry shield recommend you spray every 3 days as the mites hatch and then reproduce in 7 days

I would keep spraying every 3 days until you are sure you have got them all. Keep a look out for them as others will come. The ends of the perch is where they tended to hide in our coop.
Good hunting

I seem to have an outbreak in the grass too.  We used to let the girls free range on the top lawn but don't anymore as I have a bunny boarding business and the runs for the bunnies are there but the mite has appeared on the wooden runs and wooden huts that it on the lawn!  How can I get rid of it from th lawn?

I sprayed the coop inside, you couldn't imgaine they would be hidding there. While i was spraying it was turning green i guess killing them :-) i didnt get time to let get dry n wash it i was running late for work, it would have got dry by the time chooks go bed.

I think i might spray it again tomorrow or should i wait?
