How would you cull day old chicks.
« on: March 04, 2009, 16:15 »
OK first question you may be asking is why?
1. Cost. As raising cocks to eating weight can cost money and space that people may not have.
2. Diseases/Malformed/...

But the main question is how do can you humanly do it?

it's hard to tell which are boys or girls unless they're coloured.... (I knwo you already know this!)

you could gas them - they would just go to sleep.

In the trade they gas them with CO2 but you probably don't have access to that so I'd say neck disslocation would be very easy.

Are the chicks sex linked so you can tell which are boys when the hatch Ruff ?

Grannie Annie might be worth asking for technique. Brian will certainly know.

Rather you than me.

I have four cream legbar and 6 scots grey. I defo know that the legbar are sexlinked and have read that the scots grey are (but very little info on them).

I know they gas them with Co2 and also they get dropped in to a mincer live!!!

I am just being prepared and want to know what to do if a problem arises.

Yes you can get it.  It's for starting engines (googled it wikipedia)

CO2 would be safer

I'm inclined to agree. Well done for asking ahead of the need btw RH.

Better than having to find out in a rush.

I have read on another poultry forum that the way to do it quickly without any stress to the chick is --- hold your thumb against the neck and press firmly against the sharp corner of a table. This will dislocate/ break the neck instantly.
Havent tried it myself, havent needed to yet :(

There are three signs of old age. The first is your loss of memory, the other two I forget.

Thanks guys I also picked up some eggs from a breeder this evening and they suggested dislocation of the neck but they normally end up pulling the head off (trying to be sure it would be painless) or they other way is chop the head off.  I know it is not a savourey subject but it must discussed. You can not purchase ether/type products in the UK even for starting your car!!!

Can't remember where my little book is at the moment, but in there, it shows a chicken sexer holding the chick in his right hand, and he had the chicks head laying over his index finger, it's neck under the middle finger, and the body over his other 2 fingers.  Then he pushed down hard with his middle finger, which broke the chick's neck.

Brian said when he watched it done at his friends turkey farm, the sexer, just picked up a chick in each hand in this way, looked at their rear ends and if it was a girl, she was put into the box of girls, if it was a boy he was dispatched within seconds.  But I have never done it myself.  the only time Brian had to do a chick for me, he managed to pull its head off, so the next one I did myself in the wall dispatcher!
