How To Make a low cost Live Catch Rabbit Trap
« on: April 16, 2009, 11:51 »
There has been a lot of people having problems with rabbits so below is a link for a live catch rabbit trap thats easy to make.

http://www.thehuntinglife.com/html/sections/articles/competitions/building-rabbit-trap.html

I have been using this trap for a few weeks now and have found a couple of problems to resolve these I made the following alterations.

1st
Make the treadle from the same wire mesh as the rest of the trap. Rabbits will chew through wood

2nd
Use wire instead of tie wraps to fasten the treadle in place. Again I found that they bite it and it snaps

3rd
The trip mechanism that is used is a bit sticky. I modified this slightly as described -
A. firstly take a piece of long still wire (coat hanger type)
B. fasten this on the treadle where the string is fastened, make sure that it can move freely.
C.put a small screw in the side edge of the door at the bottom leaving about ½ – 1cm proud. Make sure that it does not catch the side of the cage.
D. Once you open the door note where that small screw comes to. You will need to cut the wire from the treadle so that it is long enough to raise the treadle about 1 -2 inch from the bottom of the cage,  feeds under the screw with the door open and just catch the wire cage 2 squares past the screw. If its too long the trap wont work. If its too short you wont be able to set the trap.
Test the trap until you get it right.

Set the trap in place with no bait inside, leave it there for a couple of days.
After then, place bait inside behind the treadle, I just use cabbage from my lottie that has gone to seed.
Never handle the trap without gloves, you will get your scent all over it and the rabbits won't go near it.
Once you start catching the *, reset the trap straight away. I was getting a rabbit out every day.

If you are releasing the rabbits, release them a few miles away or they will just find there way back.
If you are killing them for the pot make sure the kill is quick and clean.

Whilst I trap rabbits I would not kill them if they were not going to be used as a food source.

By Law. If you set a trap it has to be checked each day.

Sorry if I upset anyone...

But I thought rabbits were classed as vermin, and therefore, if caught have to be dispatched! They aren't supposed to be released.

I maybe corrected on this though.
Now your grips too strong

Gotta keep faith that your path will change
Gotta keep faith that your luck will change tomorrow

You are indeed correct. There is a law that forbids them being released.
But at the end of the day there are people that would rather release them.
