bantam pekin cockerel
« on: July 07, 2012, 14:43 »
Hi Folks
I have got the chance to get a bantam pekin cockerel for free but my question is how noisy are they, we already have four ISA hens who can make a little bit of noise but nothing to bad.
We live in a residental street so dont have open fields  but I don't want to upset the neighbours either.
Thoughts please

Its likely to be pretty noisy, but probably in a more high-pitched annoying way than a larger bird.

I've recently had to rehome our lovely lemon cuckoo Pekin bantam boy due to the noise he made, and not just in the morning. he would crow about 4 times a day lasting about 10 minutes each session
I didn't want to rehome him as I'd had him since he was 5 weeks old but it got so you couldn't stand the noise, and that was us not the neighbours!!
Nearly everybody will give the males away for free.

Our boy doesn't make too much noise. Our garden is a reasonable length and everyone nearby is double-glazed which will make him less annoying. None of our neighbors have ever said anything bad, in fact they seem to like a crow from time to time.

I find the crow of a smaller bird much more piercing than that of a larger bird.

Just be aware that cockerels crow, not only on a morning and at dusk, but throughout the day.

One of my boys used to start crowing, and continued for up to half an hour at a time.  Which might cause a problem for you at any time of the day (especially if any of your neighbours work a night shift!
