Saving/Sowing Seeds
« on: July 29, 2019, 00:10 »
I have collected seeds from poppies and snapdragons.
Would it be better to sow these now and put plants out over winter, or should I be saving the seed until the spring.

Thanks
Elaine

"Snapdragons = I would wait for spring as I don't think they will fare well in really cold winter conditions.. the slugs would be interested in them come early spring if it is warm and wet.

Poppies - by nature the seed simply cascades onto the ground when the wind blows and germinates in spring. If you have tons you cold do a bit of both - sprinkle where you want them and also sow in early spring or into pots or modules ready to plant our later.

Pot grown ones may be useful so you van select where you want them instead of allowing nature a free hand.

Sweetwilliam - I have heaps of saved seed - waiting to be planted in the spring.... but I know the plants will flower again next season so... to sow or ot to sow. This is the question!! ;)

I have snapdragons come up from self sown seeds all over the place, so I guess they are hardy enough. Slug protection might be needed though, as Paul said, as they are a bit vulnerable to mollusc munching when they are small
