Hello: New Urban Farmer New to Forum
« on: July 29, 2010, 23:38 »
Hello all. I stumbled upon this great site a few weeks back and had to join as I know I could use some advice from all you knowledgeable people out there.. I recently acquired 5 chickens from a friend...well.... my friend bought some hatching eggs and incubated them and I now have 5 very endearing Sasso chicks. I have just purchased a coup and run for them but would like to know at what stage I should put them outside...They are 3 weeks old and are getting quite active and have just discovered their wings and are very curious. They are currently housed in my spare room in a 1m by 70cm box. They are starting to snooze separately now as well and have been without the brooder for 2 weeks. Alos we have no idea at this stage if they are male or female...Is there any way of telling them apart from their markings ? ( I heard that you can squeeze their colons but am reluctant to do this).
I am grateful for any advice.
Donna, SW16 London

Welcome to the site  :D

I'm going to move this thread over to Hen House as you're asking for chickeny advice  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Hi Donna, welcome to the henhouse!

Did you know Sasso's are actual meat birds?

In this warmish weather, you could try letting them outside during the day, but if the nights are going to be cool, bring them back indoors at night for a week, then put them out in their new little coop.

Someone will disagree with me, but I like to be more on the cautious side!
