I was really worried about how my year-old springer collie cross was going to react to my hens especially as she chases the ducks in the park.

She got soooo over excited when they arrived - she barked at them and kind of wacked the run with her feet wanting to play and chase...they were terrified...so she got sprayed with a water gun. Anytime she went out and ignored them I gave her lots of praise and treats. She very quickly learnt that they were not for chasing/eating/playing with. To start with I went out with her everytime to supervise and then I watched from the window.

Now a couple of weeks on and she is brilliant with them. She goes up and says hello (sticks her nose up against the wire and waggs her tail til the hens come up and see her -and they do!) but no over excitement, no barking, nothing. She gets a bit jealous when I talk to them but then tries to get my attention rather than do anything to the chooks. The chooks are now used to her barking at everything else and running about and are totally unfazed by her - the wheelie bin on the other hand still freaks them out!

mmmm not sure I would trust any of mine in amongst them but thank you all for your replies - looks like a good option to let them have the area with the fruit trees and hope the dogs settle down quickly.

I know the little monsters have caught our cat a time or two and nearly washed him to death, he doesn't seem all that bothered, but I think that might be a bit too traumatic for chickens.

I went to someone's house the other day and she has two absolutely huge Doge de Bordeaux.  I watched them sitting contentedly in the garden surrounded by a menagerie of ducks, turkeys and hens which was an absolute delight.  So really I think it is down to the type of dog you have.  I have two gundogs who have bird-shaped spaces in their brains and so will never be trustworthy with the hens but I am sure that other less 'bird-orientated' breeds would be fine once they are used to them.

As to problems with land with a path through it, I sympathise.  I had a similar problem in the UK.  I had a steep moorland paddock that I used to exercise my dogs safely.  There was a farm gate at the bottom and a small pedestrian gate at the top which gave out onto a superb hilltop walk.  However it wasn't a right of way (even though I had heated exchanges with people who insisted it was!  The right of way actually ran alongside the outside edge of my fencing but over time people seemed to have forgotten that).   However,  I was happy for people to use it, provided  they shut the top gate.  That was all I asked but it was obviously too much to ask.  Eventually I got so fed up that I padlocked the top gate.  I couldn't risk my Pointer escaping as she was terrible with stock and being high up on the moors the top of the paddock was frequently submerged in fog so it wasn't possible to see if it was shut.

Now with the land I have here, the only problem I have is hunters entering my land without permission (normal here!!!).  Once I get the fencing and warning signs up, the Pointer will see to it that they don't do this again, at least not without having to count limbs/fingers on the way out!!!

We have two Rotwilers and so far they and the chickens are getting along fine they both just take no notice of each other. The only problem is one dog loves to eat the chicken poo, it doesn't seem to do him any harm but it does give him nasty breath!!! The dogs are not angels and have both killed rabbits.

I have 2 staffies and i never leave them together alone but generally speaking they get on fine even when there is food around they are good. They dont even mind Murphhy's loud barking.
