Preserving in stone jars
« on: June 14, 2013, 13:51 »
Hello,
I have some large stone jars that my parents used to pickle onions in. I'd like to do the same but not sure what to use as lids. I have a vague memory of brown paper & string. Does anyone have any ideas? Many thanks!

Similar but not quite the same, I have a Rumtopf (which you fill gradually over the season with layers of different fruits and keep covered in good strong spirit at all times to use at Christmas) and the lid doesn't fit that tightly. I seal it with clingfilm then put the lid on top and this works well.

You might try clingfilm with a weight on top of it, but brown paper and string might work just as well for a sealed once until you use them preserving. :)

Have you got some plates that are about the right size? and then put a weight on them.

Thanks for your replies. I suppose it won't need to be airtight will it.

You could use clingfilm and a weight, which would make it pretty airtight.
